Rolf A. Lundin

Professor emeritus

Rolf A. Lundin studied in the 60’s at the Business School in Gothenburg for his master degree. He got his PhD in 1973 from the University of Chicago (Illinois, USA) at what is now the Booth Business School at the university specializing in Management Science.

From 1978 through 2001 he held a chair in Business Administration at the University of Umeå, where he was the founding dean in 1988 of USBE, the Business School in Umeå. In 2001, he was headhunted for the deanship at Jönköping International Business School (JIBS) a position he held for 7 years. He is now emeritus at JIBS as well as a Courtesy Professor-in-Residence at USBE

Research-wise he has been involved in a lot of various fields covering computer simulation, management science, organization theory, public administration, general management, and many others. Over the years he has been the main supervisor of 55 PhD students and an assistant supervisor of another 50 or so who finalized the aspired degree, quite often in a wide variety of academic fields. Of the 55 in total 32 eventually became full professors.

Since the end of the 80’s his interests have focused on project research. In that area he has published quite a number of books and articles. He was the lead author of a 2015 monograph from Cambridge University Press with the title “Managing and Working in Project Society – Institutional Challenges of Temporary Organizations”. Coauthors are a group of well-known researchers from France, Germany, the UK as well as two Swedes.

By founding a business school and by also being the managing director of another one he has learned a lot about project management in practice. In fact his entire life has consisted of running or examining projects – ranging from founding the Scandinavian Journal of Management to evaluating the JAS (aircraft) project from a project management point of view.
