Birger Rapp

Professor emeritus

Birger Rapp has, since 1987, a chair in Economic Information Systems, Department of Computer and Information Science, Linköping Institute of Technology and Linköping University.

He is a member of the board of the Department of Computer and Information Linkšping University. He is also the head of the division of Information Systems and Management and research leader for the research group Information Technology and Organisational Structures. He is the director of the research school Management and IT. This school includes ten Universities and University´s colleges. He is a board member of the European Telework Foundation and also the president of CONSA (Competence Network for Simulation Applications in the Baltic countries).

He has been the president of SORA, The Swedish Operational Research Association and their representative both in EURO (The Association of European Operational Research Societies within IFORS) and in IFORS. He was the second president of EURO and has been vice president at large of IFORS, 1995-1998. He has been session co-ordinator at several conferences and he was the general co-ordinator for the EURO-TIMS conference in Lausanne. He was general chairman of Telework 2000 conference in Stockholm. He has been a member of the group for evaluating the IT-education at Finnish Universities and Polytechnics.

He has been the president of the board of Distansforum (The Swedish association for Telework) and also been an expert in the public investigation of Telework (Distansarbetsutredningen).

He belongs to the editorial (advisory) boards to the following international journals, IJMSD, JORBEL, IBIS and Omega. He is also a referee to several other scientific journals.

He has published books in investment theory, in production planning and in control, principal agent theory and flexible organisational solutions and a great many papers in international journals. He is a senior consultant to many Swedish companies and he has been the president of the Pronova Research and Development Board in Norrköping, Sweden. He was also the first president of the Association for Ekoparken, the world«s first National state Park in Stockholm.

He has participated in the EMERGENCE- project (Estimation and mapping of Employment Relocation in a Global Economy in the New Communications Environment), sponsored by European Commission´s Information Society Technology (IST) and IMIT is a partner.

Professor Rapp is also responsible for the network E-business among Swedish Universities and colleges. This network is sponsored by the KK-foundation. He is also responsible for the new research and development programme involving four universities Tredje livet (The third life). This is a research programme with four university partners and several business partners, such as Skanska fastigheter, AB Stångåstaden, Länsförsäkringar, Svenska kommuner och Landsting.

Together with professor Thomas Falk he leads a research project IT and productivity. Four ph D students will write their theses and the total programme is financed by Handelsbanken. It is also partly financed by the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise (Svensk Näringsliv).
